<h3>By Karena Thek<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Approximately 7 million people in the U.S. have idiopathic scoliosis, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scoliosis.org\/category\/teens\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Scoliosis Foundation<\/a>.\u00a0 Observation, bracing and surgery are the standard of care in the treatment of scoliosis today.\u00a0 After x-rays confirm the degree of curvature, adolescents are categorized into one of these 3 groups of treatment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Observation:\u00a0 &lt;25 degrees<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bracing: 25-40 degrees<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Surgery:\u00a0 &gt;40 degrees<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Therapeutic exercise remains the gold standard in the treatment of lower back pain, yet only recently exercise is gaining acceptance as a management option for scoliosis.\u00a0 Why is this?\u00a0 There is a scarcity of current research addressing exercise and scoliosis treatment.\u00a0 A 2014 study found that \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/24682356\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Active self-correction and task-oriented exercises reduce spinal deformity and improve quality of life in subjects with mild adolescent idiopathic scoliosis<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0 (1) <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monticone et. al performed a randomized controlled trial of 110 subjects.\u00a0 55 were randomly assigned to the experimental group, which consisted of education, active self-correction of their curve, and task-oriented spinal exercises.\u00a0 The other 55 were assigned to the control group and performed traditional spinal exercises.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the conclusion of the study, the active self-correction group had a decrease in their Cobb angle &gt;5 degrees on x-rays, and the control group stayed the same.\u00a0 The improvements in the experimental group lasted up to a year after the study ended.\u00a0 The key difference?\u00a0 One group did active self-corrections like in this video ( video with Maia doing her corrections) and the other group did traditional spinal exercises.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another more recent study published in 2020 looked at the <\/span><b>\u201c<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7175951\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Outcome of 24 Weeks of Combined Schroth and Pilates Exercises on Cobb Angle, Angle of Trunk Rotation, Chest Expansion, Flexibility and Quality of Life in Adolescents with Idiopathic Scoliosis<\/span><\/a><b>.\u201d <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2)<\/span> <b>\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This study compared two groups that participated in the same combination of Schroth and Pilates Exercises, but one group of 18 participants also wore a brace, and the other group of 51 participants did not wear a brace.\u00a0 The results?\u00a0 Both showed significant improvement in Cobb angle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The treatment of scoliosis today is finally acknowledging exercise as an effective option.\u00a0 In both studies mentioned, participants maintained a consistent practice of self-corrective exercise to achieve lasting change in their scoliosis.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span
