<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When considering scoliosis and bracing, there are four main types of braces:\u00a0 Providence, Boston, 3-dimensional, and soft braces.\u00a0 In this post, we will compare the different braces and look at the guidelines for which degree of curve needs which brace.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Providence and Boston braces have been around the longest out of the 4.\u00a0 Both braces are generally covered by insurance.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Boston brace<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Most prescribed brace<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Worn full-time:\u00a0 16-23 hours per day<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Padding added at contact points with convexity, cut-outs at contact points of concavity<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Curve degree:\u00a0 &gt;35 degrees (SOSORT)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Providence brace<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Worn part-time while sleeping:\u00a0 8-10 hours per day<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Applies over-corrective force to scoliosis that can only be achieved lying down<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Curve degree:\u00a0 &lt;35 degrees (SOSORT)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Three-dimensional brace<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Not covered by insurance companies and expensive<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Worn full-time<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Push to a corrective alignment vs. squeezing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Curve degree:\u00a0 20+<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Soft brace<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span degrees (SOSORT)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The body of evidence for whether bracing works or not varies.\u00a0 Unfortunately, soft braces show the highest rates of curve progression in comparison to rigid braces, according to \u201cThe Effect of Rigid <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Versus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Flexible Spinal Orthosis on the Clinical Efficacy and Acceptance of the Patients With\u00a0Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is thought that compliance is better with soft braces because they are more comfortable and easier to wear underneath clothing.\u00a0 However, studies show that the compliance rates are the same for both rigid and soft braces.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The consensus is that combining bracing with scoliosis-specific exercise achieves the best, long-lasting
